[Monday, January 23 - Thursday, January 26]
We had a class on Monday for our creativity journal which was sooo exciting! We will need to write a journal entry that expresses, or helps us look at things in a creative way. It makes me really nervous because I actually came here to learn to think creatively and challenge myself in that way. But now that it's time to do it, I worry that I will be bad at it!
The next session, we discussed the Uganda project. This is a module in my course that is mandatory. Basically, we are raising funds to help pay for the flights and accommodations for students who will be going to Uganda. Once they arrive, they will be helping communities build their own societies and create their own markets. In other words, we are utilizing our marketing skills withing resource constraints. In the past, students have helped create a market for Uganda necklaces and have ultimately made the communities more self-sufficient and less dependent on charity from organizations and other countries (which has greatly diminished since the economic crisis.) All to say that I am very excited about this initiative but know that I can't go because I've already planned all of my European travels. I think I want to get involved with this organization in Canada though because I really believe in everything it stands for!
Tuesday, we had our first finance class. WOW! I really loved it! I can't believe I was in business school during the economic crisis and only found out exactly what happened NOW. The professor is amazing. He makes all of these finance concepts really applicable to marketing. He is also part Canadian which makes it fun. I think he is the first "Canadian" I spoke to here. And he also mentioned that Canada did REALLY well in the economic crisis! WHOOP WHOOP! That night, I watched The Inside Job because I was so into the class we just had. I also wondered if I should maybe think of doing a thesis or PhD in marketing and its relationship to mathematics, just because I like it so much. Also decided to read John Nash's Equilibrium paper that night. Needless to say, this was a big dork day for me!
Wednesday and Thursday, we had more classes on the Introduction to Creativity Marketing. One of the first boring classes I've had to go through, but still not as boring as other classes I've taken in University. Thursday evening, Mike applied to the Master's program so that was very exciting! Keeping my fingers crossed but I have no doubts!
All in all, it's going really well! I miss my Mickey, I miss my family, I miss his family, I miss my friends, I miss my grand-parents, I miss Canada, I miss my home! But, I put that "missing" in a box. I put that box on my desk. I know that the box of "missing" is there and I know what's in it. When I want to talk about it, I can take the "missing" out, but afterwards, I have to put it back in the box. This analogy is really working for me. I also feel really good that even though it's tough for me, I will be able to do it with all the people supporting me back home! :)
